To my understanding, everybody was drinking tea in Europe and the Americas. But during the American revolution, the revolutionaries did not want anything that would help support the British army (the British made money by selling tea to the Americas). So they started to drink coffee and other stuff instead. Tea just stuck around in Britain and coffee began in America.
