∙ 12y agoIf by "normally" you mean room temperature, nitrogen exists as a gas. It actually comprises a majority of the air we breath. The reason nitrogen becomes a liquid when it is compressed is because when pressure increases, the volume decreases, so the nitrogen molecules fit closer together, making a liquid (this is because the same amount of gas takes up much more space than in liquid form). This relationship between pressure and volume is one of the Gas Laws, which is basically the equation P1V1 = P2V2, where P is pressure, V is volume, 1 denotes conditions prior to a change, and 2 denotes conditions after change in either pressure or volume to a gas. Normally, molecules are alwasys moving, so, when nitrogen is cooled and the temperature decreases, the molecules slow down. As they slow, the molecules are hitting the walls of their container less frequently, creating lower pressure inside the container. As we already know, lower pressure causes molecules to bunch together, bringing a gas to liquid phase. This is why liquid nitrogen is usually sold in thick metal containers--the container walls must be strong since the pressure inside is so high.
why is the temperature and the pressure important when giving the density of oxygen and nitrogen

Nitrogen is a gas that can be compressed. Not all nitrogen is compressed, for example the nitrogen in the air we breath is at atmospheric pressure.
Liquid nitrogen can be kept at room temperature at sufficient pressure. Otherwise, it is a gas.
A decrease will occur if the lid of the container is opened.
Lowering the temperature will cause a decrease in gas pressure in a closed container.
The pressure inside the container would decrease.
The pressure inside of a container when nitrogen gas is added depends on:what the pressure was before the gas was addedhow big the container ishow much nitrogen gas is addedthe temperature of the gas before it is addedthe temperature of the container and its contents
Lowering the temperature will cause a decrease in gas pressure in a closed container.
why it is necessary to decrease the pressure in the discharge tubbe to get cathode rays
The pressure would increase.
Either decrease the amount of gas, or decrease the temperature.
The pressure inside the container will increase. Pressure (P) is force(F) divided by the area(A) it hits on. If you decrease the area, you increase the pressure.
increases
If you increase pressure on one liter of nitrogen the volume occupied by that liter of gas will decrease.
