Advantages: Oil has a wonderful translucent "look" to it that acrylic cannot duplicate. Puddles of paint stay wet a long time, so you do not have to remix before each stroke. Oil paintings sell better than acrylic, for some reason. You can move the paint around on the canvas before it dries, blend it on the canvas, or scrape it off while it is still wet. Unlike acrylics, they do not darken as they dry- what you see wet is what color it will be when dry.

Disadvantages: Having to use turps or mineral spirits, which some people are allergic to. Some people object to the smell of oil paints

Slower drying time than acrylics, may take a week or more to dry to the touch depending on how thick the paint is (and what color- reds and yellows dry more slowly-). Some pigments may be toxic- don't lick your fingers.
