It does affect birds by the speed of the making it lose its body heat but not enough to hurt the birds.

Oil is very useful, and is used everyday. But if oil is spilled, for example in the ocean. Then it can have an extremely harmful affect on all aspects of aquatic life. Birds' feathers are covered in the oil which ruins the feathers insulating powers. The birds then die from hypothermia. It also ruins corals. Hope this was helpful. It drops quickly to zero once the temperature goes below freezing.
They are birds. If the female penguin does not return from the sea, the male will ditch the chicks & eggs to go look for her. Penguins can survive in temperatures well below freezing.
