When new seafloor is created by upwelling magma at the mid-ocean ridges, the magnetic minerals orient themselves to the magnetic orientation of Earth at the time of their solidification in the rock matrix. Thus, the history of magnetic reversals are recorded in the rock.

The rocks that record the changes in Earth's magnetic field are igneous. The easiest place to observe the record is in the igneous rock of the ocean floor. At the mid-ocean ridges, new crust is being created by the infilling of gaps between diverging oceanic plates. The infilling material is magma, which then solidifies into rock. Magnetic minerals in the magma are aligned with the magnetic poles, much like the needle of a compass. When the magma solidifies, the magnetic minerals are locked in place, recording the direction of the Earth's magnetic field at the time the rock is formed. Radioactive elements in the igneous rock can then be dated by isotopic decay rates to determine their age, and therefore the ages of the magnetic field shifts.

Deep-ocean trenches

No. That's where the rock may be, but the real answer is igneous rock, particularly that making up new oceanic crust at constructive plate boundaries.

Why does the earths magnetic field change over time?

The Earth's magnetic field changes over time because that is the way that God makes it.

How do rocks record changes in earths magnetic field?

Rocks which are liquid (lava) have their magnetic particles aligned to the local magnetic field as they cool and solidify. The rocks can be dated by the radioactive decay processes. If there is a new layer of rock (lava) laid down over this same deposit and the magnetic filed has altered, the new rock will have a different imposted magnetic field and age than the older rock.

How does earths magnetic field change over time?

It changes over time through direction and strength. So therefore Magnetic North becomes Magnetic South.

It is made by the movement of the earths core and magma field

Earth's magnetic field results from the spinning of the?

The earths magnetic field results from deep in the earths core. Magnetic conduction from within the earths core is believed to be the cause of this.

How do you know that there is not a huge permanent magnet at the earths core?

For one, the magnetic field changes continuously; this is not consistent with a permanent magnet.

Why do scientists believe that the inner core is the source of earths magnetic field?

because it has the hydro electric power to control the earths magnetic field

the earths magnetic signature is a negative polarity signature

Where does the earth's magnetic field get its power from?

earths magnetic field is generated by the circulation of liquid metal.
