when you have an element such as B or Boron its atomic number is 5. you have to add that with a element that has a atomic number that the sum of 5 and that element must be 8...this is the octete rule....therefore boron would combine with Lithium. one you may be familiar with is hydrogen and oxygen.they do not apply to this rule.

Elements are made of three things: electrons, neutrons and protons. The electrons give its charge, the neutrons keep it all in place and the protons tell you what element it is. Therefore, in order to change an element to another, you either add or remove protons.

Bombarding the nucleus of the atom with protons or neutrons could result in splitting it. The resulting nuclei would be elements of various atomic weights based on the number of protons that comprise them. It is not a cost-effective method of producing an element in appreciable quantity so the quest of the alchemists of transmuting base metals into gold is still out of reach.

Elements join together to make molecules and compounds by forming chemical bonds. The two main types of chemical bonds are ionic bonds and covalent bonds. Ionic bonds result when one element donates its electrons and the other element accepts those electrons. Covalent bonds result the two elements share their electrons.
