The sea floor is spreading because of two tectonic plates are moving apart. The technical name for this area is a divergent boundary. In this area rifts are created, and some may apply this term to what is the divergent boundary. A link is provided to the relevant Wikipedia article.
A divergent boundary is the place where the seafloor spreading occurs.
add. And this process is not confined to the sea. The Great African Rift Valley is one such and one day will become connected to the sea.

Spreading is generally thought of when speaking of sea-floor spreading. Sea-floor spreading takes place at the mid-ocean ridge where two oceanic plates are spreading/pulling apart from one another.
Is a diverse as that of the continents
Pangea broke apart because the earths plates (crusts) began to shift under, over, together, and apart from other plates. The continents were moved as the rocks undearneath them moved as a result of earth's boundaries and the growing of the ocean's floor and its reduction.

Alfred Wegener tried to explain how continental drift took place, but he had no concrete evidence about how the continents moved. He had to explain what force is pushing and pulling the continents. And mainly in the early 1900s, most geologists thought that mountains formed because Earth was slowly cooling and shrinking. So most geologists would have to change their ideas of how mountains formed. Then in 1960 Harry Hess, an American geologist, he thought about the ocean floor in relation to the problem of continental drift. He proposed a process called sea-floor spreading. In sea-floor spreading, the sea floor spreads apart along both sides of a mid-ocean ridge as new crust is added. The ocean floors move like conveyor belts, carrying the continents with them. Hess soon found evidence from molten material, magnetic stripes, and rock samples from the mid-ocean ridges. And he proved that Wegener's theory wasn't wrong.

When the plates drift apart through sea floor spreading, so do the continents
sea floor spreadingThe continents of South America and Africa started to spread apart when the mid-Atlantic ocean ridge started creating new oceanic crust which pushed the continents apart.
Plates play a role in Pangaea changing into 7 continents because there are 7 major plates in the world. These plates are being moved by sea-floor spreading, pulling the continents along with them.
The fact that plates move apart means that the plates will carry anything.
yes. because of the sea-floor spreading making Africa and South America drift apart even more
Earth's crust is composed of the continents and the ocean floor.
No. The sea floor is much younger than the continents. The oldest sea floor is about 200 million years old. The continents are billions of years old.
In the middle of the ocean is a rift where the ocean floor squeezes out lava and pushes the ocean plates apart.
Yes, in many places it is. But like the surface of the earth that you can see, the ocean floor has many different topographies. The ocean floor has mountains, volcanoes, deep valleys, and reefs. There vast areas of vegetation and areas that are devoid of vegetation, often due to how deep they are and how much sunlight penetrates. There are also arctic regions of ocean floor as well as tropical regions. The ocean floor is really as varied as the continents above the water.
In sea-floor spreading, the sea floor spreads apart along both sides of the mid-ocean ridge as a new crust is added. As a result, the ocean floors move like conveyor belts, carrying the continents along with them.
When gravity pushes down on the floor it causes ridge pressing. Ridge pressing pries the the sea floor apart causing the magma to come up out of the mantle to cool and create a new crust. Not only does it create a new crust but it pushes the continents father apart. That is why over time they grow father and farther apart.
