For those who do not know, ATP(Adenosine-5'-triphosphate) is a multifunctional nucleotide, and plays an important role in cell Biology as a coenzyme that is the "molecular unit of currency" of intracellular energy transfer. The maximum energy that can be yielded from ATP is via the reaction that breaks off two of the three phosphate groups:

ATP + H2O --> AMP + PPi

The energy released per mol of ATP hydrolysed is 45.6 kJ. A mol refers to 6.02 × 1023 molecules, therefore using simple division:

45.6 kJ / 6.02 × 1023 molecules = 7.6 × 10-23kJ per molecule of ATP

Which may seem small but rarely is a single molecule considered for energy calculations. For comparison the burning of butane yields about 420 kJ/mol.
