There is no upper or lower limit on the Richter magnitude scale and as such there are an unlimited number of divisions! However in practical terms, the Richter scale is not suitable for measuring earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 6.9.

How many times larger than a 6.5 magnitude than a 7.5?

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake is 10 times larger in amplitude than a 6.5 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale. Each whole number increase on the Richter scale represents a tenfold increase in amplitude.

What scale are earthquakes measured on?

Earthquakes are measured on what is called a Richter Scale. The Richter Scale goes from 0 - 9. However, if England had an earyhquake, and it measured 1 on the Richter Scale, it would have a 'power level' of 10. But if Japan had an earthquake and it measured 3 on the Richter Scale, then it would have a 'power level' of 100, as each time you go a 'power level' up, then you times it by 10. The Richter Scale is measured by a computer which has a pin (that has been dipped in ink) and when an earthquake strikes, the pin goes onto the paper and it makes a zig-zag shape of how high or low the earthquake has gone, during the time it happened. An alternative way of measuring earthquakes is by using the Mercalli Scale. The Mercalli Scale is measured by scientists and i goes from 1 - 12. If you were to talk about an earthquake, and how disasterous it was, then if you were refering to the Richter Scale, you would say 'It measured 2', but, if you were refering to the Mercalli Scale, then you would say that 'it was WEAK, meaning that it was felt only by a few people, especiall on the upper floors of buildings. Many do not recognize it as an earthquake. Standing motor cars may rock slightly. Vibration similar to the passing of a truck. Duration estimated.' I hope this helped and if you have any more questons relating to the RESTLESS EARTH topic (geographical) then I am more than happy to help.

Describe two different ways to measure the size of an earthquake?

The Mercalli scale, which measures the visible effects; and the Richter scale, which measures the energy given off by the earthquake, are the two most common ways of measuring the size of an earthquake.

An earthquake with magnitude 6.6 on the Richter scale releases how many times as much energy as an earthquake with magnitude 5.6?

A 3.0 earthquake releases 1,000 times more energy than a 1.0 earthquake.

Each degree is divided into how many parts in the earth?

Each degree of latitude and longitude on Earth is divided into 60 minutes, and each minute is further divided into 60 seconds. This means that there are a total of 3600 seconds in one degree.

How many measurements of Richter scale of tsunami?

The Richter scale was created solely for the purpose of measuring earthquakes, not tsunamis.

How many numbers are there on the Richter Scale?

The Richter scale has no theoretical upper or lower limit, in practical terms however the lowest level is dependent on the sensitivity of modern seismometers. As their sensitivity increases the minimum possible Richter magnitude will decrease. The maximum practical earthquake magnitude that the Richter scale can detect is a magnitude 8.0 event.

How many kids did Charles f Richter have?

Charles F. Richter did not have any children. He was a seismologist who co-developed the Richter magnitude scale for measuring earthquakes, but he did not have any kids.

What is the rating on the Richter scale of the hurricane in Haiti?

The Richter scale is used to rate earthquakes, not hurricanes. The earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010 was a 7.0. Haiti has been hit by many hurricanes. We would need to know which one in order to give the rating.

How many times greater on the Richter scale is the ranking of the level before it?

The Richter scale is logarithmic, so each whole number increase represents a tenfold increase in amplitude of the seismic waves and approximately 31.6 times more energy released. This means that each level on the Richter scale is approximately 10 times greater than the level before it.

How strong is the earthquake in San Francisco 1906 on a Richter scale?

The quake of San Francisco in 1906 measured 7.8 on the moment magnitude scale (Mw), though many scientists believe that it could have measured up to 8.3.
