There are far too many variables to say. The answer to this will be relaitive to your location, and you would need to take some measurements in your local area. The best way to calculate this would be to take a sample (say 1 foot square) and multiply your results by the number of square feet in one acre. A suggested means would be to use a rain gauge with a 1 foot square funnel, to measure total rain fallen on the area. then you would need to asertain the drop size. I would use a sheet of tissue paper, weigh it, then allow it to be hit by a single drop of average size, and then re-weigh. 1 gram will equal 1 millilitre, and thus you can work out how many drops by dividing your total water in your sample area. You may want to use a normal rain gauge in addition to this in order to get an acurate idea of when you acheive a 1 inch rainfall.

One inch of rainfall is equivalent to: 22 610.673042 UK (or Imperial) gallons per acre OR 27 154.286106 US gallons per acre. The 'acre' does have several values, listed as "acre"; acre (suburbs); acre (survey); acre (Ireland). However I have used the "standard" acre that I know of as 4840 square yards.

This is a nice illustration of the complexity of the US measurement system.

1 US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches. (in3).

1 acre is defined as 1 chain * 1 furlong. A furlong is 10 chains. 1 chain is 22 yards, or 66 ft, or 792 inches.

1 acre = 1 chain * 1 furlong

= 1 chain * 10 chains

= 792 in * 7920 in

= 6,272,640 in2

1 inch of rain over 6,272,640 square inches of area equals 6,272,640 in3.

Now, divide that by the number of cubic inches in a gallon

6,272,640 in3 / 231 in3/gal = 27,154.2857 gallons

By comparison, the metric system is much easier.

1 mm of rain over 1 hectare (=10,000 m2) means 10,000 L/ha (litres per hectare).
