CFC's i.e Chloro Fluorocarbon which are released from deodorants, refrigerants are carried upwards towards the atmosphere where in presence of the high energy ultraviolet rays these break down into molecules of chlorine and fluorine molecules which further deplete ozone.

What are chlorine atoms in the stratosphere?

They break down ozone into oxygen atoms.

Chlorine atoms are said to catalyze the destruction of stratospheric ozone because?

Chlorine atoms take part in the destruction of ozone, but are reset by said destruction, and are capable of doing it again, and again. Atoms such as chlorine (released into the air in more complex molecules... the propellants and refrigerants "chlorofluorocarbons", and in gases released by Nature and burning of garbage and forests) combine with ozone in the upper atmosphere, and the chemical reactions break up the ozone molecules into ordinary oxygen, which cannot absorb dangerous UV light as ozone does.

How is the atmosphere damaged by air pollution?

Pollution can affect the atmosphere, more specifically the Ozone layer, because CFC's (chlorofluorocarbons) and other chemicals react with the Ozone (O3) and turn into Chlorine monoxide (ClO) and an oxygen molecule (O2) which then starts the deterioration of the Ozone layer. Chlorine monoxide then reacts with an oxygen atom (O) and create a chlorine atom and an oxygen molecule (O2). The chlorine atom can then react with another Ozone molecule (O3) to form Chlorine monoxide (ClO) and an Oxygen molecule (O2) and the cycle continues.

How much damage can 1 chlorine atom do?

One chlorine atom can break apart more than 100,000 ozone molecules. This depletes the ozone layer and causes more radiation to reach the Earth's surface.

What is triatomic oxygen?

A molecule of Oxygen containing three atoms also known as the ozone layer

Chlorofluorocarbons. (CFCs)

Is Chlorine atoms stealing oxygen atoms from the ozone layer a physical or chemical change?

Chlorine is doing it chemically. It reacts with it.

How are chlorine free radicals are formed in the upper atmosphere?

Chlorine radicals are formed by CFC's. They deplete the ozone layer.

Why are small quantities of chloroflorocarbons harmful to the ozone layer?

Free oxygen atoms can replace the chlorine in chlorine monoxide, releasing a free atom of chlorine which can then recombine with an oxygen atom in ozone, destroying more ozone.

What are three oxygen atoms combined that protects us from ultraviolet radiation?

The molecule formed is ozone. It is present as the ozone layer.

What is causing the ozone layer to get damaged?

The presence of CFCs are creating holes in the ozone layer. UV light causes CFCs to be borken down, creating chlorine atoms that are capable of breaking down ozone into oxygen in the stratosphere. The holes in the ozone layer are formed when the ozone is broken down at a faster rate than it can reform. This enables more UV radiation to reach the earth's surface and it is a greater problem in the southern hemisphere. The ozone layer is getting damaged. It is due to the harmful UV rays of the sun.

Where is the ozone layer formed and stored?

Ozone layer is formed all over the earth. It is there in stratospheric layer.
