Nonliving things are abiotic because the prefix a means non, not, against and things like that. Living things are biotic because they don't have the prefix a. (This is true I got it from my science teacher...Pce

You have that the wrong way round, LIVING things have changed Earth's atmosphere to make it suitable for them. When Earth first came into being, the atmosphere was NOT like it is now, it could not sustain the life that exists today. Over Geological time tiny bacterial organisms generated the Oxygen that we have in our air today, and altered the whole environment of the planed in doing so. Thus the driving factor is LIFE not the atmosphere.
Protist are important to the earths ecosystem because they were the first complex life on earth, provide as a food source to many living things, and help clean large bodies of water
I do not know whether my explanation is correct, here goes: When the volcanoe erupted,a small amount of lava came in contact with a nearby lake, slowly it forms a kind of living thing, the bacteria. Eventually, different kinds of bacteria or living things were formed, that is why we living things were formed. I got this conclusion watching the Discovery Channel. If there is anithing wrong, please correct me, Thanks. (Adding to the subject) I won't delete what you wrote but, What really started it was different elements brought to Earth by Asteroids, comets, Etc. These elements combined with others (Hydrogen, oxygen, which formed water) And the environment became more livable, thus Life was made. you are on the DOT!

Bacteria were the first living things on the planet Earth.
They aren't saying things just to say them. Organisms areorganized. Organelles compose cells, cells compose tissues, tissues compose organs, organs compose organ systems. There are many further levels of organization.
The first level of organization are living cells. The second level of organization are tissues. The third level of organization is an organ. The fourth level of organization is the organ system. The last level is organisms.
