In the USA, the air is much cleaner now - as anyone who was alive 40-50 years ago will tell you, especially around some of the bigger cities. This is due to several major environmental laws passed in the 1970's.
Elsewhere in the world, particularly in the developing world and especially China and India, the air is much dirtier than it was 20 and 30 years ago. Some of the cheapest energy and manufacturing techniques are also the dirtiest. These countries are just now beginning to deal with their air pollution simply out of necessity. Poor air quality takes a tremendous toll on human health when it is so severe, and you can attach a monetary value to these damages.
The air 3.6 billion years ago would have contained very little oxygen, mostly consisting of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water vapor. Today, Earth's atmosphere has significantly more oxygen due to the process of photosynthesis by plants and cyanobacteria. Additionally, the presence of pollutants and greenhouse gases in the air today is much higher compared to that ancient time.
Algae activity
Chemical weathering is a bigger problem today due to human activities that have increased the release of pollutants into the atmosphere. Industrial processes, such as burning fossil fuels, have released higher levels of pollutants like sulfur and nitrogen oxides, which when combined with water in the atmosphere forms acid rain. Acid rain accelerates chemical weathering, leading to the degradation of rocks, buildings, and monuments at a faster rate than 100 years ago.
On the contrary, various efforts can help improve air quality, such as reducing emissions from vehicles and industries, transitioning to renewable energy sources, planting trees, and promoting eco-friendly habits. These actions can contribute to cleaner air and better environmental health.
The atmosphere 4.5 billion years ago was mostly Carbon Dioxide from volcanoes with little or no oxygen in the air. Though, through the process of photosynthesis there is now 71% of Nitrogen, 21% of Oxygen and 0.3 % of water vapour and Carbon Dioxide!
it would still be smoggy
The composition of the atmosphere today is different compared to 1000 years ago due to human activities. The increase in greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide has led to global warming and climate change. This change in composition is impacting the Earth's climate and ecosystem.
They don't!
500 years ago, people did not have the technology to travel in the air like we do today. However, the concept of hot air balloons was being developed during this time, eventually leading to the first successful manned hot air balloon flight in 1783.
There are dust mites in the air, tiny unseen insects, germs, hairs, and much more in the air. The air is much more polluted today then it was hundreds of years ago.
The air 1 million years ago was pretty much the same as it is now.
