add. One idea of a great flood possibly arose from observing shells and marine organisms well above current sea levels. The explanations given were without rigorous foundation.
A better possibility is that it was the flooding of the Black Sea from the Mediterranean Sea towards the close of the ice ages. There are undoubtedly man made structures at about 100m deep under the Black Sea. And also fresh water snail remains.
This flooding is believed by some to be as recent as less than 6000 BC. Well within the range of human habitation.
And the arrival of such a flood would have been an easy prediction just by watching the water levels rise on the Mediterranean side. The minimum depth in the Bosphorous Strait is 36 m, and the sea level rise consequent upon the end of the ice ages would be about 100m. The proximity of the fabled Mt Ararat adds a little substance to this idea.
It rained for 40 days & 40 nights, but the flood itself lasted 150 days
There is no evidence for a great flood except for an influx of fresh water from the Hudson Bay area towards the end of the last glaciation which brought on a temporary cold period in the North Atlantic area about 12,500 years ago. The present ice age started over 2.5 million years ago and has been notable for many glaciations and interglacial periods such as the present interglacial.
Science has dated the end of the last Ice Age to about 10,000 years ago. Conservative Biblical scholars, of the kind who hold that the Biblical Flood was a real, divinely created event, have dated the Creation to more recently than 10,000 years ago, and thus the Flood even more recently than that. Therefore, the dates of the Biblical flood and the last Ice Age cannot be compared because they derive from completely unconnected chronologies.
There are floods in Tewkesbury every winter, though seldom as bad as the flood of Summer 2007, in July.
Yes, this is an example of irony. The situation is ironic because instead of solving the flood problems as intended, the completion of the retaining wall may actually exacerbate the flooding issues.
