The names are related, but only by historical confusion. In ancient times several different ores from the region of Magnesia in Thessaly were mistakenly thought to be related, and all were called magnes in Greek. One was what we know call magnetite or lodestone, and it is from it that we get the word magnet. The others were later found to be oxides two previously unknown elements, now called manganese and magnesium. For more details see the History section of the Wikipedia article on manganese.

No, because magnesium isn't a magnetic metal and oxygen can't be, since it's a gas in air, so no magnesium oxide isn't magnetic.
