Landforms within our region(interior plains) dictate some of the jobs and industries found in the Plains. This area has the largest farmland in Canada (mostly located in the southern part) because of the flat land, long sunny summers that help the grains to grow and the rich soil. Farmers grow many grains that are used for food. For example, wheat is ground into flour. Flour is used for bread, pastry, spaghetti & puffed wheat. Oats are used for porridge & animal feed. Barley is another crop grown here. It is used for malt (beer & whisky), soups, medicines and animal feed. Rye is grown to make dark flour used for biscuits, bread and animal feed. Canola is becoming a very popular crop and is used for cooking oil. The farming industry provides a variety of jobs and hosts the possibility for many other industries. Oil and Gas within this region also create many jobs. Oil and gas are found underground by drillers and sold around the world. Mineral resources are also found below the surface of the interior plains and are mined in closed or open pit mines. Potash is another important industry found underground. Potash is a salt that is used for fertilizer. 90% of potash is found in Saskatchewan. These are just a few of the many, many jobs that are created by the natural resources and landforms of this area.
Jobs in the renewable energy sector, such as solar, wind, and geothermal energy, would likely increase as the demand for alternative, clean energy sources grows.
