What is surface waves?

Waves are formed by any disturbance upon a fluid medium. 2. Surface ocean waves are formed by wind stress. If the wind is weak, capillary waves form. Their restoring force is capillarity (caused by the hydrogen bonds between water molecules). If the wind is stronger, gravity waves form. Their restoring force is gravity. 3. Tsunamis are formed as a result of undersea disturbances. These can be tectonic movements, like earthquakes, but they can also be caused by landslides, as in the one that occurred in Anchorage, Alaska. Tsunamis are barely noticable in the open ocean, but their wave steepness and wave speed increase tremendously as they approach shore.

What happens when a wave hits a barrier it cannot pass through?

A mechanical wave travels through a medium because a medium is necessary for the propagation of that wave. With a mechanical wave, like sound, mechanical energy is put intothe wave, and the medium carries the energy of the wave. This is in contrast to an electromagnetic wave (like light) which can move through a total vacuum.

Which type of wave affects the surface of the land by causing it to rise and fall like waves on an ocean?

L-wave

When air near the ground is warmed by sunlight what happens?

Air near the ground is not directly heated by sunlight. Sunlight heats the surface of the Earth with (mostly) short-wave energy. The surface of the Earth absorbs this short-wave energy and emits long-wave energy. This long-wave energy is what heats air near the ground. When air is heated, it expands, becomes lighter, and rises higher in the atmosphere. This is the driving force behind all weather on the planet.

Explain the movement of the water molecules in waves?

In a transverse wave, a molecule/particle will move up and down, with double the amplitude of the wave. In a longitudinal wave, the molecule/particle will move side to side, equal to the wavelength (?) of the wave

Why doesn't an object move forward as a wave passes under it?

The wave is not strong enough to move the object forward. It just passes along under the object and goes on its way.
