There is no lead in a lead pencil, it's actually graphite. Graphite is composed of carbon, and so is diamond... different atomic structures yield incredibly different minerals, both extremely useful in industry and science. A single crystal of graphite, and a lot of tape, stuck together and pulled apart repeatedly, will eventually result in a layer of graphite one atom thick, which cannot be separated any further, and is called graphene. Graphene is one of the strongest, lightest, and most conductive minerals known, and it's discoverers were awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in physics.
