One advantage of surface mining is that it is generally a more cost-effective method compared to underground mining, as it requires less specialized equipment and labor. Additionally, surface mining allows for the extraction of large quantities of minerals over a large area.

Area mines are surface mines that remove shallow coal over a broad area where the land is fairly flat. Huge dragline shovels commonly remove rocks overlying the coal (called overburden).

Weathering processes like mechanical weathering and chemical weathering break down rocks and minerals on the Earth's surface over time. Subsurface rocks are not as exposed to these environmental factors, so weathering processes are less active below the surface.
Mining underground provides access to deeper and richer mineral deposits that are often more valuable. It also allows for better control over ventilation and environmental impacts compared to open-pit mining. Additionally, underground mining can be safer for workers as they are protected from surface hazards and inclement weather.

The deadly effects of an atomic, or nuclear weapon include heat, radiation and blast. All three of these effects will propagate over a greater surface area if detonated some distance in the air over the target. Assuming the target population is concentrated at or near the surface, such as a city or most military bases, an air burst would be most deadly. If the target is underground in a hardened bunker, then a surface or even subsurface detonation would be more effective.
There are two primary methods of mining coal, surface mining and underground mining. There are over 1,000 surface mines and more than 1,000 underground mines in the US. Underground mining is more difficult and requires more miners, but much of our best coal is underground. Mining has become much safer and more efficient over the years. In 1980 there were over 220,000 coal miners in the country. Today there are fewer than 100,000. But while 1980 production was about 800,000 tons, today we produce over 1 billion tons with fewer than half the number of miners. In recent years surface mining in Wyoming has mushroomed, making that state the leading coal producer at almost 300,000 tons per year. West Virginia and Kentucky, the traditional leaders, with both underground and surface mines, each produce around 170,000 tons.
