The Gulf Coast region, particularly the coastal areas of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, experiences the most hurricanes in North America. This is due to its location in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, which provides the necessary conditions for hurricanes to form and strengthen. The shape of the coastline in this region also helps funnel hurricanes towards these states.

Hurricane Betsy was a classic Cape Verde storm which developed on 27 August, 1965. It moved somewhat erratically in a northwest direction. It cut a swath through the Bahamas, Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. Betsy then moved on to Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. After moving through Louisiana, Betsy headed north into Arkansas. From there the storm headed northeast, following the Mississippi River to the Ohio Valley and Pennsylvania. What was left of Betsy finally dissipated over Ohio on the 13tth of September.
