Hurricane Betsy was a classic Cape Verde storm which developed on 27 August, 1965. It moved somewhat erratically in a northwest direction. It cut a swath through the Bahamas, Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. Betsy then moved on to Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. After moving through Louisiana, Betsy headed north into Arkansas. From there the storm headed northeast, following the Mississippi River to the Ohio Valley and Pennsylvania. What was left of Betsy finally dissipated over Ohio on the 13tth of September.
Hurricane Betsy made landfall along the southeastern coast of Louisiana, near Grand Isle, on September 9, 1965. It brought devastating winds and flooding to parts of New Orleans and the surrounding areas.
Yes, a hurricane can typically take any direction, given all necessary conditions arise; and temperature plays a big part on their turns and loops. As you can see Hurricane Betsy (1956), Hurricane Ivan (2004), Hurricane Jeanne (2004) and Hurricane Dennis (1999) all had very bizarre turns that (if they had been on land) would have been considered ''going backwards''.Please take a look at the links below! However, in professional terms, they are really called "loops", usually when a hurricane appears to turn around it really is going in a loop often in a counter-clockwise direction. It can then re-enter land which is a common occurrence in these types of situations.
No, scientists can't make a hurricane change direction. As it is, we still have trouble even predicting the path a hurricane will take. We are not even on the level of influencing what a hurricane will do.
The storm most well known as hurricane Floyd never hit Florida and the states was not significantly affected. The storm instead made landfall in North Carolina. There was also a Hurricane Floyd that affected the Florida keys in 1987 but did not result in much heavy damage.

Hurricane Katrina occurred in 2005 and caused widespread devastation in New Orleans, primarily due to levee failures. Hurricane Betsy occurred in 1965 and also impacted New Orleans, but its damage was primarily due to storm surge. Katrina was more deadly and caused more financial damage than Betsy.
If the wind is blowing in you face, then the center of the hurricane is to your right.
