Where is Cape Verde?

User Avatar
Cape Verde is an archipelago of islands located West of Africa. It is next to Senagal and Gambia. It has become a big tourist atrraction over the last 5-10 years. The previously uninhabited islands were discovered and colonized by the Portuguese in the fifteenth century, though the position of the Islands of the Blest, the longitude zero meridian of the ancient Geography of Marinos of Tyre and Ptolemy, agrees tolerably with Cape Verde. The country is named after Cap Vert (meaning Green Cape) in Senegal, the westernmost point of continental Africa.

How hot is cape verde in February?

User Avatar
The temperatures in Cape Verde varies from island to island (there are ten islands in Cape Verde) but generally the temperatures average around 25 degrees in February. Cape Verde is labelled as a 'semi-desert' area, meaning that there is a short rainy season, mainly between August and October. The Windward Islands (Sao Antao, Sao Nicolau, Sao Vincente, Santa Luzia (uninhabited), Sal and Boa Vista) are situated to the north and east of the Archipelago and often have dry and arid climates. The Leeward islands (Brava, Fogo, Santiago and Maio) are to the south and west and have a more tropical climate. It is worth bearing in mind that that although the temperatures are a decent 25 degrees in February, there is a strong breeze that blows across the Windward islands, particularly Sal and Boa Vista, during this time. Although many people who have been to Cape Verde have said that it didn't bring the temperature down, the winds were strong enough to be a little bit of a nuisance; particularly at night. These winds are at their strongest in February, and start dying down towards March. In the summer months, when temperatures can reach above 30 degrees, this breeze is more gentle and often makes the hot temperatures very pleasant.

Asked in Cape Verde

Are there mosquitoes in cape verde?

User Avatar
The only mosquitoes in Cape Verde are on the island of Santiago, and even then they are only around during a few months in the Summer. The holiday islands of Sal and Boa Vista are too hot and dry for them to survive. It is extremely unlikely that you will see mosquitoes here and even if you do they are unlikely to carry Malaria. You should always visit a doctor before you travel to ensure your immunisations are up to date. They should be able to tell you whether the Cape Verde islands are a Malaria risk.
