There are several physical problems in extracting crude oil. First, the oil is not just a pool of fluid in the ground. It is matrixed in rock and flows slowly. When you pump too fast it is like a frozen slurpy. It starts sucking air when it is pumped too fast. Also, sometimes there is not enough room between the rocks for the thick liquid to flow so you have to "frac" it which is to expand the rock and fill it wil sand. Next to transport the fluid it is hard because of other materials in it. For example parafin blocks the pipes and has to be treated with heat. Heat can also cause fire with petroleum.

Lastly, the oil is over a mile deep in the ground and sometimes as much as4 miles i the ground. At that depth you encounter poisonous gas pockets and pressure pockets that are dangerous.
