You can prevent A flood by using less water, And knowing when to turn it off.In many countries, rivers prone to floods are often carefully managed. Defences such as levees, bunds, reservoirs, and weirs are used to prevent rivers from bursting their banks. When these defenses fail, emergency measures such as sandbags or portable inflatable tubes are used. Coastal flooding has been addressed in Europe and the Americas with coastal defenses, such as sea walls, beach nourishment, and barrier islands.A dike is another method of flood protection. A dikes lowers the risk of having floods compared to other methods. It can help prevent damage; however it is better to combine the dike with other flood control methods to reduce the risk of a collapsed dike.
Live somewhere reasonably well above sea level. Don't build on riverbanks is a good idea, too.
When considering where to live you can check with local authorities to discover the flood risks in the area; you'll be able to get this information in writing.
You cannot floodproof a home; water gets in anywhere if there's sufficient pressure behind it. You can build a home on stilts, as many in tropical areas do, but you need to be sure how high the waters can rise and how well the stilts can, in any case, resist pressure.
Also you can build floodways and dams.
Perhaps you're asking how to protect yourself from natural disasters, which frequently involve flooding? Nowhere on earth is proof against naturally occurring events which can be deadly, though some areas are far more prone to trouble than others.
Every household everywhere should have an emergency plan in place, with which all members of the household are familiar. There's no need to make this a scary thing: frightening people pretty well guarantees they'll panic in an emergency.
All you need is to have those around you aware of what to do when an emergency arises; it's simple to arrange a plan of action which everyone will follow if necessary.
The best way to develop this kind of plan is to contact your local fire department; they are usually the experts when it comes to handling any kind of emergency. Fires are only part of what they do; many fire departments are now called Fire and Rescue, which describes them more accurately.
You can arrange for your family to meet with personnel from your local rescue authority in order to learn about emergency procedures. If you can arrange this to happen with a group from your local community, this is good, but not essential. You and your children will pass on what they learn to others, in any case. Do include pets in your plans; it's frequently possible to protect them, which saves a lot of stress later.
On a more personal note, and speaking as a Survivor of several occurences which have seen one of my homes totally destroyed, other homes partially destroyed, and, once, an entire city destroyed, and, in all cases, urgent evacuation of the areas unavoidable, I suggest you keep all personal data - documents, family photographs, anything precious or very necessary to you - in one area. Get in the habit of backing up your computer data, and keep those backups in the same place, along with a small radio and a waterproof pack of batteries for it, plus a self-powering torch. All you need is one small travel bag, waterproof (!) kept near the main entrance to your home; when you take that gorgeous, irreplaceable photo of the family, put a copy in the bag straight away. That's the bag you grab when evacuation is unavoidable.
When the need for escape seems likely, add to the bag bottled water, sorbolene cream, lightweight uncrushable tops and trousers, a sealed pack of moist wipes, a couple of surgical dressings and a thermal blanket. And a box of tissues. Think about what you do every single day before you leave the house, and what you need to do these things: these are the things you take with you. Sorbolene cream is important because you won't be able to access clean water for washing: in an emergency, clean water is only for drinking.
Having your escape-bag ready means you always have easy, or easier, access to essentials. Whether it's a flood, a hurricane, a cyclone, or simply an urgent call to a critically-ill loved one - another kind of disaster - the point is, you can be out the door and on your way in seconds, with everything you really need right in your hand. You can get more clothes later, believe me. Clothes will be the last of your worries.
Again, and this is so important, don't convey any sense of panic to those around you. Urgency, yes, panic, no. Not in preparation for disaster, nor when disaster is imminent, nor when it's happening all around you. Panic kills. Calm people survive. You might be panicking inside, but don't let anyone know that, because panic is the most deadly infectious condition ever identified.
Floods, fires, earthquakes inevitably kill, but people die needlessly, every single day, from panic.
There are a myriad of ways to prevent floods. The creation of flood plains and winding streams are two of the best ways to hinder the accumulation of water by providing a route for the drainage of water. Also, the protection of wetlands helps to maintain a natural drainage system to provide a place for the excess water to gather. Such devices allow the water to evaporate before it can accumulate, creating flooding conditions.
Levees also impede the collecting of water. Levees are embankments composed of soil and earthen material that are used to prevent annual flooding in many areas. With a levee, a huge amount of rain water is required before flooding occurs. However, one drawback to their use is that if water is able to get past the levees, then the flooding is significantly worse and causes several times more damage.
Other ways of preventing floods include placing sandbags along the riverbank to serve as levees and placing large rocks on banks to prevent erosion, which prevents riverbanks from deteriorating, remaining high enough so that flooding will not occur as frequently.
Natural vegetation, such as trees and plants, helps prevent runoff. In areas where vegetation has been removed by such processes as logging or construction, it must be replaced, a method known as reforestation. This is especially important in the headwater parts of a river's drainage basin. To help control flooding near a river's mouth, spillways are used. These are channels that run through the back swamps parallel to the main stream.
Here are some suggestions to prevent floods from dams.

Literally those are related to particular dams, although, those will be assistive for others.
Continuously preserve our forests, learn proper way of garbage disposal, educate the people on ways to prevent floods and government should implement strict laws and regulations on people/organization abusing our environment which greatly cause floods like illegal logging, water pollution, squatting, etc... government should study and trace well the symptoms of this issue to come up with better treatments.
You can prevent it by not cutting more trees..throwing garbage..and etc.
We can build clay dams, remove weeds from ditches, build Bailey bridges etc.

Flood control is the term that describes the measures a community takes to correct and prevent flood risks.
To prevent getting caught in a flood there are several safety rules to follow. Always monitor the weather using a NOAA weather radio or a reliable news source. Get out of areas known to flood. If an area does flood, go to higher ground. Do not attempt to cross flowing water. Do not camp or park along streams or near water
After the flood wait until someone come and rescue you. Last if no one comes call for help.
flood barriers
deforestation in the country because roots of trees absorb the water so they can control flood to prevent flood grow trees more and make dams is also a good way .

You cant prevent, but you can prepare for one when you see that there is a flood watch or flood warning. Flash floods are when to much rain comes too fast, so there is nothing you can do to prevent
forest prevent frequent occorence of rain
To help prevent floods, some effective measures can be taken. These include building and maintaining proper drainage systems, implementing land-use planning and zoning regulations to avoid construction in flood-prone areas, and creating and maintaining flood control infrastructure such as levees and dams. Additionally, raising awareness about the importance of not littering or dumping waste in water bodies can help prevent blockages in drains and canals, reducing the risk of floods.
