Nitrogen is in period 2 and column 15 of a wide form periodic table. Nitrogen is a nonmetal and is most like phosphorus, its nearest neighbor in column 15. Nitrogen is one of the elements that exist primarily as diatomic molecules in the gas phase at standard temperature and pressure.
