As long ago as the nineteenth century, scientists discovered that changes in the level of atmospheric carbon dioxide gases can result in corresponding changes in global average temperatures. However, they did not yet have sufficient evidence that carbon dioxide levels were beginning to increase or that global average temperatures were beginning to increase correspondingly.

Since the 1970s, climate scientists have linked the rise of more than 35 per cent in atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide to the concurrent rapid rise in global average temperatures. They have also proven that the increase in carbon dioxide levels are caused by human activities. So, joining the dots, global warming is caused by human activities.
