Swamps that exist today do not have any connection with fossil fuels. It is the swamps, rivers, marshes, and lakes that existed millions of years (often 100's of millions ago) that have everything to do with petroleum. If all conditions are right, then the organic material deposited in these environments can turn to oil, gas or coal. You can find many more links on the internet on the process by which plant and animal life became fossil fuels. In learning about the process, keep in mind that places like Saudi Arabia or Oklahoma were very different 100 million years ago.
