No, but you can calculate it, using conservation of momentum. Conservation of momentum can be verified experimentally in less extreme cases; in the case of the Earth moving towards the falling object, the movement is just too small to detect.

We have to assume that you can neglect the effects of air resistance, and the only influence on the rate of fall is gravity.

We also have to assume that the object starts from rest, i.e. somebody dropped it but didn't throw it down, so it starts falling from zero speed.

The distance it drops in ' t ' seconds is ( 1/2 G t2 ).

' G ' is the acceleration of gravity ... 9.8 meters per second2, or 32.2 feet per second2, depending on how you want the answer.

So, to answer the question:

-- Time the falling object with a stop-watch. Take the number of seconds it took to fall.

-- "Square" the number of seconds. (Multiply the number by itself.)

-- For meters, multiply by 4.9 . For feet, multiply by 16.1 .

That's all there is to it.

Do you use a hydrometer to measure wind speed?

To measure wind speed you use an anemometer. These are sometimes called wind meters. Meteorologists use anemometers to help predict weather.

What is the name of the tool used to mesure wind speed?

An anemometer is the easiest and best way. To tell how fast the speed is using an anemometer, determine how fast the anemometer is spinning with a speedometer if possible.

What gauge do scientists use to estimate the wind speed of a tornado?

Scientists usually use the severity of the damage a tornado causes to estimate its wind speed.

How can you use the anemometer?

The Anemometer measures wind speed, not wind direction. Wind Direction is measured by the wind vane.
