The Ring of Fire is the name given to the junction of several tectonic plates around the Pacific Ocean. These junctions form a kind of "ring" shape, hence the name. 452 volcanoes are located on the Ring of Fire, and about 90% of the world's earthquakes occur on it.
Pierce College is publically funded and operated community college in Los Angeles, California. The school is one of nine schools in the local community college district and currently serves over 23,000 students. It was founded in 1947 as the Clarence W. Pierce School of Agriculture and retains agricultural programs to this day. Pierce College is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges.
Pierce offers 2-year associate's degrees and one- and two-year certificates of achievement. In addition, it provides courses that prepare students for transfer to four-year institutions, both in California and around the country. Computer technical skill is also a strong subject area. In this area, available certifications range from legal office procedures to database programing. Other strong subject fields include Business administration and agriculture.
Two-year degree programs include both Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees. They span a much wider range of subjects than do the school's certificate programs and have different strengths as well. The strongest two-year subject area is agriculture. The department offers Associate of Science degrees with 10 different specializations, including Agricultural Business, Pre-Veterinary Medicine, and Landscape Planning and Design. Other degrees are scattered across a wide variety of disciplines, and include Associate of Arts degrees in several foreign languages, computer-related fields, industrial technology, photojournalism, political science and theater arts.
Pierce also has many sports teams. The school has produced successful athletes for all major sports leagues in the US except the NHL.
