If this were to happen, which for most nuclei would be unbelievably unlikely, it would form a different isotope of the same element.

I can't offhand think of any way a nucleus could gain or lose a neutron without something else happening at the same time. A neutron can change into a proton by emitting an electron (and an electron antineutrino), or a proton can absorb an electron and change into a neutron, but in both of these cases there's more going on than just the neutron number of the nucleus changing.

What is it called when an atom gains or loses neutrons?

When an atom actually gains a neutron from outside it is called neutron capture. Atoms almost never emit neutrons (except when high energy processes happen). Most cases of "gain or loss" of neutrons by an atom happen entirely inside the nucleus, when the process of Beta decay converts a proton to or from a neutron.

What do you call it when an atom loses and gains energy?

When and atom loses or gains enery, it becomes positivly or nevetivly charged and can become an ion.

An ion is formed when am atom?

An ions is formed when an atom gains or loses electrons.

When an atom loses or gains it becomes what?

When an atom reacts what happens to the atoms?

1.it forms a bond. 2.it either loses or gains to become stable.

What is an atom that gains and loses an electron and has an electric charge?

When an atom gains electrons, negatively charged anions are formed. When an atom loses electrons, positively charged cations are formed.

When an atom loses or gains an atom its called?

covalent/ionic bonding.

If a chlorine atom gains or loses a valence electron it becomes a charges particle called an?

Ion. Any atom that loses or gains an electron becomes an ion.

What is the result of an atom that gains or loses an electron?

This is called a redox reaction. An atom that loses an electron is oxidized and an atom that gains an electron is reduced.

What do you call an atom that gains or loses electrons?

An atom that gains or loses electrons is called an ion. If it gains electrons, it results in a negative ion called an anion. If it loses electrons, it results in a positive ion called a cation.

What happens when an atom gains an electron when it loses an electron?

It become an ion, positively charged when it loses an electron (called a cation, e.g. Na+) or negatively charged when it gains an electron (called a anion, e.g. Cl-).
