Interesting Facts

Is the 2nd most abundant element in the earths crust.

Never occurs as a free element, it is always mixed with an other element.

8th most abundant in the universe!

When mixed with oxygen it forms silica which is usually found as sand.

Only 2 elements make up almost 3/4 of the Earth's crust.

Uses

Is used when turning solar energy into electricity.

Used to make concrete an/or brick.

Silica is whats used to make glass.

It is in electronic devices, for the space industry.

It is one of the important ingredients to make steel.

Silicon is the second most abundant element in the crust, after oxygen. It is also the 8th most abundant element in the universe. I think that's interesting.

Silicon and Germanium are used to make computer chips.

SILICON is a hard, solid material that is one of the chemical elements, like hydrogen and iron.

(SILICONE is a compound of silicon. Do not confuse the two words, pronounced "SIL-i-cun" and "SIL-i-CONE". One often hears uninformed commentators get them confused.)

There are at least three interesting facts to know about silicon.

1. Silicon dioxide is beach sand, and thus is very common in the world. In fact, silicon may be the most abundant element in the Earth.

2. Although pure silicon looks shiny like a gray metal, it is not a metal. It is a semiconductor. That makes it quite valuable as a base for making transistors and integrated circuits used in computers and other electronic devices.

3. Compounded with other elements, it can become silicone, which is a transparent grease or oil that is valuable in engineering and household uses. Silicone can be manufactured with almost any amount of viscosity, or stiffness. At a certain degree of viscosity it is used surgically in plastic bags that serve as breast implants for women who want to have larger breasts than nature has given then or who have lost a breast to cancer.
