In South and Central American rainforests, agoutis, acouchis, pacas, and tapirs are the dominant herbivorous mammals.

In most African rainforests, duikers, tapirs, okapi, pygmy hippos, bongos and gorillas fill that ecological role. Some African elephants also populate the Ituri rainforest in Zaire, but generally are not found in other rainforests on the African continent.

Asian rainforests are populated by elephants, rhinoceroses, mouse deer, forest deer, and numerous smaller herbivorous mammalian species.

Herbivorous mammals in the more temperate rainforests of North America and Europe include beavers, otters, marmots, deer, elk, rabbits, squirrels, and a wide variety of small rodent species.

Additionally, all of the world's rainforests, whether tropical or temperate, host a wide variety of predominantly herbivorous birds, amphibians and reptiles.
