Chemically it is the simplest alcohol (CH3OH). It was initially made by the destructive distillation of wood. Presently the principle source is synthesis from methane in chemical plants and refineries.

Methanol is used in a wide variety of applications:

  • dyes and perspex
  • solvents for paints and dyes
  • as a monomer in producing polyester fibres, methyl cellulose and silicone compounds in the manufacture of the antiknock additive M.T.B.E.

It is poisonous to human beings and even in small amounts can cause permanent blindness or death.

Methanol is the simplest alcohol (CH3OH) and is made by dry 'fermentation' of whood. Don't confuse it with Ethanol (C2H5OH).

Methanol is toxic to eyes (sight) and kidneys at already 2%concentration.
