Radioactive means unstable, so radioactivity means instability. A nucleus is radioactive, by definition then, if it is unstable, i.e. its proton/neutron ratio is such that it "wants" to change.

Nuclear binding energy, which is a manifestation of the strong force that holds the nucleus together against the repulsive electromagnetic force of the protons in the nucleus. This can be extracted by either:

  • fission - breaking apart of fissionable isotopes (e.g. 233U, 235U, 239P)
  • fusion - combining of fusible isotopes (e.g. D, T, 3He)

This can happen either slowly in a controlled manner in a reactor or rapidly in an uncontrolled manner in a bomb. (Workable fusion reactors have never been made,

as none has yet been able to power itself, let alone release excess energy to power other things too.)

This is also known as atomic energy?

The source of atomic energy is the "binding energy" that exists in the nucleus of all atoms. This is the energy that is contained in the union of the protons and neutrons of the nucleus. When the nucleus is split apart, the binding energy is released.

The military were interested in it as a weapon. and as a source of power in submarines.

What highly reactive mineral is used as a source of atomic energy for bombs?

No mineral. Two metals- uranium and plutonium- are used in atomic bombs.

There are many of types of these energy sources one source is what energy causes when the center of an atom splits?

atomic fission if i understand the question properly. Did you mean one source is what energy is caused from the centre of an atom spliting?

Atomic Energy of Canada. has written: 'Report (Atomic Energy of Canada)'

What is Alternative energy source produced from atomic reactions?

Nuclear fission is when a neutron is fired at an element with a high atomic number, which splits and releases more neutrons and energy as a result. Nuclear fusion occurs in stars and experimental reactors.
