What is caused by global warming?

Global warming is caused by too much carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. When we burn fossil fuels, or oil, use cars or factories, it sends CO2 to our atmosphere and we have too much of it. This extra CO2 adds to the natural greenhouse effect and makes the earth hotter. Before global warming, there wasn't as much CO2 in the atmosphere and when it bounced off the earth it eventually found a gap to through back into space. But now it just creates more warming which can lead to more severe weather here on earth.

A:This current warming cycle started 10,000 years ago, during a period of very low CO2 levels. We know this from ice core samples and Holocene methods of determining CO2 and temperatures.

The start of this cycle most science experts agree is similar to the previous four similar cycles and was caused through natural solar variations. This cycle has seen a rise in CO2 levels from a low of around 190 ppm to the current level of around 385 ppm (depending on season). A portion of this rise is believed, by most climate experts, to be caused by the start of fossil fuel use in the 1800's.

The science of global warming is still a very new science and even the IPCC will admit that the process of solar variation and it's causes are still not well understood, but they do remain the primary driver for the start of this cycle.

Pollution is one of the biggest man-made problems usually produced by the burning fossil fuels which gives off CO2, which also traps heat in the earth's atmosphere, & the fact that the mining of these fuels methane to escape.
