Foliated rocks are formed by pressure, they are buried deep. Before, minerals are scattered in the rock randomly. After it goes through presure, minerals are squeezed together and line up in rows. This happens deep underground and inside mountains. The rock has the same minerals in it before and after pressure. The texture of these rocks are foliated. Foliated are minerals that are flattened and lined up in layers.

What two things are necessary for foliation to form in a metamorphic rock?

Directional pressure and differential stress are necessary for foliation to form in a metamorphic rock. Directional pressure causes minerals to align in the direction of the applied pressure, while differential stress leads to the segregation and elongation of mineral grains, resulting in the development of a foliated texture.

Difference between schistose foliation and gneiss-to foliation?

A schistose foliation would be found in a metamorphic rock with a large amount of micaceous minerals, creating a flaky texturing with easily cleavable layers. Gneiss is more coarse in texture, not as easily cleavable along planes, and contains less micaceous minerals.

Why doesn't quartzite exhibit foliation?

To exhibit a foliation one needs the presence of at least two mineral types to form the foliation layering. As quartzite is a single mineral rock, it will remain massive even in environments where the adjacent rock types have become foliated.

Foliation is the arrangement of minerals in?

Foliation is the arrangement of minerals in a rock that results in a layered or banded appearance. It is commonly formed in metamorphic rocks through processes like pressure and temperature causing mineral alignment. Foliation is a key characteristic used to classify and identify different types of metamorphic rocks.

Which mineral is responsible for the strong foliation in a schist?

The mineral responsible for the strong foliation in schist is usually mica (such as biotite or muscovite). These minerals have a planar structure that aligns during the metamorphic process, creating the foliation planes in the rock.

Where do foiliated rocks form?

Foliation occurs deep underground.

What is salty foliation?

Slaty foliation, is a type of parallel foliation consisting of fine-grained platy minerals. The direction of foliation is usually perpendicular to the direction of maximum stress.

How is the orientation of foliation related to stress?

The foliation in metamorphic minerals is always perpendicular to the direction of pressure. E.g. Vertical pressure is applied, the foliation will be horizontal, and vice-versa, the pressure is horizontal you get vertical foliation. From yahoo answers

What mineral property are you using if a mineral splits along a flat surface?

The term is called CLEAVAGE. It is a special form of Foliation in rock metamorphism.

Do all metamorphic rocks have layers?

No. The layering or foliation only occurs when there is a variation in the composition of the original rock. If the rock is homogeneous, then there will be no foliation.
