Hi when to plates pul apart under the ocean its called tectonic plate drift or contenetial drift. This allows countries to moves centimetres evvey year in any direction the plate travels.sometimes the plates rub and can cause earthquakes ,volcanos or tsunamis.

When continental plates pull apart they form this?

rift valley Answer 2 Continents are formed when continental plates pull apart.

What happens when 2 tectonic plates spread apart?

When two tectonic plates spread apart, it creates a divergent boundary where new crust is formed as magma rises and solidifies between the plates. This process leads to seafloor spreading and the formation of features like mid-ocean ridges.

How far apart are tectonic plates moving?

Tectonic plates move at various speeds, generally ranging from 2 to 10 centimeters per year. The rate of movement can vary depending on the specific plates involved and the type of boundary they form.

What are movements in the earth called?

The hot rock deep in Earth's mantle flows upward slowly, while cooler rock near the surface sinks because hot materials are lighter than cool materials. The rising and sinking of materials due to differences in temperature is called convection. As Earth's mantle flows, it breaks the crust into a number of large slabs called tectonic plates, much as slabs of ice break apart on a pond. The slow flow of Earth's mantle drags the crust along, causing the continents to move, mountains to form, and volcanoes and earthquakes to occur. This constant motion of Earth's crust is called plate tectonics. In some places, usually under the oceans, Earth's plates are spreading apart. New magma from the mantle rises to fill the cracks between the plates. Places where plates spread apart are called spreading centers. Many volcanoes occur where plates pull apart and magma wells up from within the mantle to fill the gap. The material from the mantle is made of iron and magnesium-rich silicate rocks. It hardens to form rocks and creates oceanic crust made of basalt.

What 2 things happen when divergent boundary plates move apart?

When divergent boundary plates move apart, magma rises from the mantle to fill the gap, creating new oceanic crust. As the crust cools and solidifies, it forms a series of underwater mountain ranges known as mid-ocean ridges.
