Overburdened is a term applied to an object being used beyond its specifications. Normally the object is over-engineered so that a minor infraction or a major infraction for a short time can be tolerated. However, don't always depend on it. The warranty of the object, if any, will be voided, or the usable life will be drastically shortened.

For example, if a sedan is rated to transport 2000 lbs without towing, it is overburdened if it is being asked to carry 5 adults of weight 400 lbs each and then tow a trailer of weight 2000 lbs. Other overburdened examples would be that your laptop is on fire because of an overheated Li-ion battery; the screw head can no longer be turned or its thread is stripped; a medical intern who has not slept for 24 hours; you feel sick after a heavy meal; etc.
