Sulfur is the most common element used in the vulcanization of rubber. When rubber is heated with sulfur, cross-linking occurs between the polymer chains, which improves the rubber's strength, elasticity, and durability.

The basis of all rubbers are long simple chains - they are polymers - in natural and most man-made ones, that is a carbon chain, in silicone rubbers the repeat unit is Si-O. Most of what is attached to that chain are usually carbon and hydrogen-containing groups but almost anything can be included into the rubber molecules if particular functionality is introduced into the attached groups. Cross-linking of carbon-based rubber in particular can be achieved by reacting them with polyvalent elements such as sulphur.
