igneous rocks started as melted lava and cooled to be rocks. Metamorphic rock started as a sedimentary rock, and was heated up and put under pressure to create the metamorphic rock.

Classic example - igneous = obsidian. Metamorphic = marble (marble is limestone that's been heated and squeezed a lot).

Name the 3 kinds of rocks?

There are three major types of rock: igneous (formed from the cooling and solidification of magma or lava) sedimentary (laid down as sediments) and metamorphic (changed by heat and/or pressure)

Name the three families of igneous rocks?

This is a very simplistic answer. But, it should reveal the basic processes involved in rock formation.1. Sedimentary, like coal and limestone. They are made from particles of substances that settle and coalesce into a layer that becomes rock.2. Igneous, like granite and basalt. These rocks were formed by heat. Think of lava.3. Metamorphic: Marble and slate. These are rocks that were in another form and got changed by pressure into their present form.

What do most igneous sedimentary and metamorphic rock have in common?

It is more likely that igneous and metamorphic, or igneous and sedimentary rocks would have something in common than sedimentary and metamorphic. The reason is because the processes involved in making metamorphic rocks is completely different than the processes needed to make sedimentary rocks. Only high temperature, high pressure minerals such as olivine, pyroxene, amphibole can withstand these kinds of conditions. Take quartz and feldspar, two of the most abundant minerals found in sedimentary rocks, these minerals would not be found in abundance in metamorphic rocks because they are not high temperature, high pressure rocks. But the most simple answer is that all the major groups of rocks are made of minerals. Metamorphic has high pressure and Igneous does to and both made from a particle called magma.

What is the major difference between intrusive rocks and extrusive igneous rocks?

Extrusive means that the lava has come out and cooled on the surface. Intrusive means that the lava has cooled in the Earth i.e. underground.

How are the 3 major groups of rocks different?

The three main groups, igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary are all part of the rock cycle. They are different in the way they formed and in their properties. Igneous rocks are formed when magma/lava cools and solidifies; metamorphic rocks are formed when a buried existing rock is heated up by the Earth's natural heat and is altered in its structure; and sedimentary rocks are formed when existing igneous or metamorphic rocks are weathered and eroded, and the resulting rock fragments are compacted together to produce a new rock. Each of these 3 types of rock can become any of the other types; ie an igneous rock can be subjected to further heating, which alters its structure, and turn into a metamorphic rock; or a sedimentary rock could be drawn back down into the Earth's molten mantle via a subduction zone, undego melting, and then later rise back to the surface and solidify to become an igneous rock.
