I assume you mean the small numbers written under the letters that are the element symbol.
The one on the bottom left is the "Atomic Number" and is the number of Protons in the nueclus of the atom, this is what makes an element unique.
1H indicates that Hydrogen has only one proton and is "Atomic Number" one, these numbers are not normally written in unless it's relevent to whatever is being discussed.
If the symbol is in a formula for a more complex molecule then there might be a number on the bottom right of a symbol - this is an indication of how many of this atom are in the molecule. so Water is H2O the two indicating there are two hydrogens in the structure.
There are also numbers above, on the left the "Atomic Mass" being the total number of Protons and Neutrons in the element. Top right being the "Charge" if any (this would make it an Ion)
Symbol (southwest high school Sophomore MN)
O is the the symbol of the element oxygen.
If you meant "element" as in a chemical element, there is no element with the symbol "ef" in the periodic table.
Calcium is an element, it's symbol is Ca, and like everything else except for hydrogen it was formed by nuclear fusion in the heart of a star which has since blown up.
The chemical symbol of einsteinium is Es.
a subscript Number of atoms of that element in the molecule.
SubcutaneousSC = subcutaneousSubcutaneous (under the skin)When written as 's.c.', it refers to the abbreviation for subcutaneous, meaning beneath the skin. When written as 'Sc', it is a symbol for scandium which is a metallic element.
It is called a chemical symbol.
The number placed below an element symbol in a chemical formula is called a subscript because it indicates the number of atoms of that element in a molecule or compound. The subscript is written slightly below the element symbol to differentiate it from the coefficient, which applies to the whole molecule or compound.
The symbol for an element is typically written as [A-Z][a-z][number], where A is the element's atomic number, Z is the element's chemical symbol, and the number represents the sum of protons and neutrons (called mass number). So, for 12 protons, 10 electrons, and 12 neutrons, the symbol would be Mg.
Tungsten. Its symbol, however, is still W.
If you think to calcium the symbol is Ca.
The fifth element on the periodic table is boron, which has the symbol B.
This is known as the chemical symbol for the element.
This is known as the chemical symbol for the element.
The chemical symbol is one or two letters that represent an element.
That is the chemical symbol of an element, such a H for hydrogen, Hg for mercury, etc.
