A storm is classed as force 10 on the Beaufort scale, 54.8-63.6 mph. Bear in mind that wind gusts during stormy conditions may reach 100 MPH or more. Personally, I would settle for force 10 as the average.

A tropical storm is classified as a hurricane when it reaches winds a minimum of 74 mph. The average wind speed of a hurricane depends on what category it is.

Category 1: Winds 74-95 mph

Category 2: Winds 96-110 mph

Category 3: Winds 111-130 mph

Category 4: Winds 131-155 mph

Category 5: Winds greater than 155 mph

There isn't really an "average", and such a thing wouldn't mean anything anyway. Cyclones/hurricanes/typhoons can have winds from about 40mph to over 180mph, although certainly the upper end is less common.

Cyclones vary in speed, and so are classified into categories according to their wind speed.

  • Category 1 cyclones have wind gusts reaching less than 125 kilometres per hour.
  • Category 2 have wind gusts between 125-170km/h.
  • Category 3 cyclones have wind gust measuring between 170-225km/h.
  • Category 4 have wind gusts between 225-280km/h.
  • Category 5 cyclones have wind gusts exceeding 280km/h.

Lightning is caused by a build up of electrical charge in the atmosphere. Wind speed is not connected to the production of lightning. Lightning can occur at any wind speed.
