Los Angeles and San Fransisco
Along the San Andreas Fault in California is one likely place for an earthquake.
A large number of cities are built in earthquake zones on or near fault lines. Earthquakes can create nice deep harbours, hills with nice views and other topography to make a good place to build a city (San Francisco is good example). There are far too many cities to list here but many of the cities that have coastline on the Pacific ocean have fault lines nearby....
The New Madrid Fault
Fault lines exist where one tectonic plate meets another. For example the San Andreas Fault in California is the boundary between the North American plate (on the east of the fault line) and the Pacific plate (on the west of the fault line)
It is dangerous to live near the San Andreas Fault because the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate create a fault. A fault is the boundary between two plates. The San Andreas Fault causes multiple earthquakes due to it being a strike-slip fault. That is when two plates are grinding against each other and moving in different directions. Earthquakes often also cause major tsunamis that effect vast areas around it.
San Andreas Fault
It runs just to the west of San Francisco, and ~60km to the north east of Los Angeles.

Earthquakes can occur almost anywhere in southern California, but are usually located in areas on major fault lines.
not very much except that we've build three major cities right in the middle of it San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego
