It's common for many cloud tops in a thunderstorm to be higher than 55,000 feet above sea level, says Brent McRoberts of Texas A&M University. Clouds over that range belong in a special category. "That may be as high as they get over the U.S., but in other parts of the world, thunderstorm clouds can be even higher," he says. "In 1990 in the Coral Sea off eastern Australia, some nearby weather balloons measured a thunderstorm cloud to be at least 63,000 feet high. And in the northern Australia and Indonesia area, sometimes called the 'maritime or oceanic continent,' some of the highest clouds known have been reported, several measuring from 65,000 to 72,000 feet by astronauts in the space shuttle. It can happen, but it's rare to see thunderstorms reach more than 65,000 feet."
Many thunderstorms produce very little wind, and wind speeds in most thunderstorms do not exceed 40 mild per hour. In rare cases, though, thunderstorms may produce winds to well over 100 milers per hour.
It depends on the depth of the peat. One method is to dig out the peat to reach solid ground. Should this be impractical, another method is to drive pillars down to reach firm ground, in several areas of the foundation's footprint. A concrete raft is laid, incorporating the top foot or more of the pillars, and the building is built on top of the raft.

Heavy rain becomes a thunderstorm when there is thunder and lightning. This usually happens when the clouds reach a significant enough height and the updraft becomes strong enough to separated electrical charges.

Before a tornado touches down it is called a funnel cloud, which looks like a tornado but does not reach the ground. A funnel cloud develops from the mesocyclone of a supercell thunderstorm. A supercell thunderstorm is characterized by the presence of a mesocyclone, which is a deep, continuously-rotating updraft.

The next time theres a thunderstorm, try a little experiment with sound. Try to time how long it takes distant sounds to reach you. From the safety of our home, count the seconds between the time you see a flash of lightning and the time you hear the noise of the thunder.
