The theory is called 'uniformitariansim' or 'gradualism' and basically states that geologic change takes place slowly over time this is in contrast to another hypothesis known as 'catastrophism' that the Earth has been molded and shaped by sudden, geologically speaking short, violent events such as massive volcanic events, ateriod impacts, glaical lake flooding events, flood basalts etc. Most geologists synthisize arguments from both schools of thought as to what actually occurs and has in the past. Meaning that it is commonly agreed upon in the Earth Sciences that the Earth is 4.6 billion years old and its' history has been puncuated by, geologically speaking, brief and violent landscape altering events and in between these events long periods of 'inactivity' (relativley speaking) have been experienced.
The concept of "the present is the key to the past" was established on 1788. The idea was from James Hutton, a Scottish geologist.
Uniformitarianism is a principle that geologic processes that occurred in the past can be explained by current geologic processes. So, it is the idea that the same geologic processes that same Earth today have been at work during all of Earth's history. Catastrophism is a principle that states that geologic change occurs suddenly. Catastrophies include floods, asteroids, earthquakes, etc. Today, modern geology is based on the idea that gradual geologic change is interrupted by catastrophies.
Uniformitarianism: a principle stating that earths processes occurring today are similar to those that occur in the past

The principle of uniformitarianism states that geologic processes that occur today are similar to those that have occurred in the past.

The Principle of Uniform Processes states that the same processes acting on the earth today have acted on the earth throughout its history. It states that laws of physics and chemistry have not changed through time. Therefore, the processes that work today on the earth has always been acting, although not necessarily at the same rates that they do now.

that are equal and in opposite directions
The concept of gradualism. Also called uniformtarianism.
An object at rest, or an object with a constant velocity are the two possible states of an object with zero net force. An object with zero acceleration has zero net force. There many be several forces acting on the object, such as the force of gravity and the normal force of the ground. Even though an object sitting on the ground has two forces acting on it (gravity, and the normal force) the object does not accelerate because these forces are equal and opposite. An object with zero net force has all forces acting on it equally balanced and cancelling out
