This refers to the 10th of May in 1869 when, at Promontory Summit, Utah, the last spike for the "completion" of the transcontinental railroad was driven. The track was in fact not complete due to the fact that cargo and passengers had to be ferried across the Missouri river between Council Bluffs, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska. (The two burgs.) A train from Ogden, Utah brought the band from Fort Douglas that played for the celebration at Promontory Summit.

Ice burgs are melting because of us; human beings, we are using cars, buses, trains etc. etc. Where we are using cars and buses there fumes are being put with lots and lots of other chemicals and fumes and gases which is making a dome of greenhouse gases; which are melting the ice burgs !!
Crater Lake, OregonAnswerLake Vostok and about 140 other subglacial fresh waterlakes are found under the surface of Antarctica. As an example, Vostok is located beneath Russia's Vostok Station, 4,000 meters (13,000 ft) under the surface of the central Antarctic ice sheet. It is similar in size to Lake Ontario. In these locations the lakes have been free of eny contaminaation by human pollutants for thousands of years and would rate as the cleanest water in the world.
Fossil fuels are harmful to the environment because when they are burnt they release green house gases. These gases create the greenhouse effect. When the suns rays come through the atmosphere and reflect of the sea they cant escape. They remain trapped inside atmosphere and cause global warming. The steadily rising temperatures (1 degree over the last century) melt ice burgs and cause other problems. _________________________________________________________________ Fossil fuels are only harmful to the environment when used or released incorrectly. The spilling of fuels into the ground can cause problems with water or the ground itself. The proper burning of fossil fuel releases only O2 and CO2. Both of which are benign gases. The improper burning can create all sorts of problematic gases. Global warming being the least significant of an issue.
