I think you mean the poppies that you pins on your jacket or shirt? Well if you do, then the soldiers who have been badly wounded at war made and sold them because they could not work. These earlier ones are made out of read cloth with a black center. Plus, there weren't enough poppies to go around to everyone.

There are many types of plants to be grown on clay, a common one would be walnuts. Clay soil is found in California.
During WW1 poppies flowered all over the land where the fighting had been taking place - as they do in any recently disturbed soil. For that reason, the British still wear poppies in their buttonholes in November to remember the dead . The crosses are figurative, marking the places where millions of men died.
Plants grow on soil like where it was disturbed but there was still soil left.

It is important to give enough thought when planning to plant poppies as to where is the best place to grow them. Generally poppies are best grown when planted in soil where the exposure to sunlight is maximum. If you are planning to grow them indoors, make sure you install flourascent light in the room where the flowers are grown. You need to give in light to poppies for at least 8-10 hours a day.
