Wind is caused by a pressure difference between two regions of air. The air from a high pressure zone, caused by a higher local temperature, will move into a low pressure zone. We feel the passage of this air is "wind".

The cause of the pressure difference is due to temperature variations. Different regions of the earth will get more sunlight and have a higher temperature for various reasons. They could be closer to the equator, where they get more direct sunlight, or have less cloud cover that day, or have different terrain. A desert traps heat differently than a forest, which is different from an ocean.
