Best Answer

The United States Geological Survey monitors worldwide seismic activity.

Earthquakes are rated along the Richter scale. The Richter scale was invented by a seismologist, Dr. Charles Richter, and is a measure of the largest seismic wave recorded on a particular kind of seismograph located 62 miles from the epicenter of the earthquake.

There are numerous organizations and individuals involved in tracking earthquakes. There are freely available networks of seismic data provided primarily through universities, private companies, and government organizations.

One of the better known organizations involved in reporting things like seismic events and hazard maps is the United States Geological Survey. This is not however their sole function, nor is it exclusive to the USGS.
