THF stands for tetra-hydro-furan, a very effective heterocycle solvent. For structure, think a cyclo-pentane where a CH2 has been swapped for an oxygen atom.
It is used because it is a very polar ether, and so able to solvate organometallic compounds like grignard reagents, but, unlike other polar solvents, like water, alcohols, and ketones, it will not react with the (expensive) organometallic reagent.
